Description:

Sergey Dmitriyev of Kholuy painted this large five-sided box. His art and his style are products of self evolution which he has worked very hard on. He has made himself into a great artist by using his God-given talents to their fullest. It isn't surprising that his work gets better with every painting he completes.
The box has four scenes around the body, and one scene on the lid's top. Each of them features the picturesque views of St.Petersburg. The lid shows the embankment of Fontanka River. On the front side we can see the golden domed St. Isaac's cathedral, the Admiralty, and the Rostral Column. The left side depicts the Savior on Blood Cathedral, and the sculpture of golden winged lion. The right side shows the Stock Exchange, and the St. Peter and Paul Fortress. On the rear side we can see a gorgeous view the Kazansky Cathedral.
The abundant usage of various shades of blue and brown help to reproduce the atmosphere of St.-Petersburg. The scene is enriched by delicate gold paint added over the drawing, giving the work a magic glow. Aluminum paint is also used here but in very minimal amounts.
The box's exterior is richly decorated with fine golden scrollwork.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged at the top of the composition and the box rests on four legs.
The work is signed with the artist's name, the village of Kholui, and the title ("St.Petersburg") at the bottom of the scene painted on the lid. The artist has also added an inscription to the interior of the lid. Here, Dmitriyev again wrote his name, the title, Kholui, and added the year of 2006 of which the piece was finished and the fact that this is an author original design, and his flaring signature all in gold.
