Description:

This is definitely a quality work from a talented Kholui artist. Dobrin has created multiple original works, including this one. The subject of the depicted composition is based on the Pushkin's fairy tale "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". It is the traditional Russian tale of a king and his son who become separated due to the jealous interference of two wicked stepsisters.
The left part of the composition depicts Prince Gvidon with his beloved wife Princess Swan, and the magic squirrel that shells golden nuts with emeralds inside. In the center we can see the thirty-three knights with their uncle old Chernomor, rising from the raging sea, while the right part of the composition shows the feast in Gvidon's palace arranged to celebrate his family reunion.
Dobrin paints with a unique style, incorporating varied color shades, and layered textures. The drawing is quite fine, with small details in the characters' faces and costumes, some architecture and the landscape. The composition is richly enhanced with gold metallic paint that adds a rich brightness to the work.
Dobrin's skill as an artist is further demonstrated on the rich ornamentation that adorns the exterior of the box. A string of gold beads completed with intricate scroll designs in each corner of the lid frame the composition. A glorious leafed and flowered filigree pattern painted gold and accented with aluminum decorates the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. At the bottom of the composition Dobrin has written his name, Kholui and the title. On the lid's interior he has written the same but added the year of 2006, the indication that this is his original work, and left his cursive signature to finalize this Kholuy miracle.
