Description:

Nikolay Galda painted this box. His work is very unique to Kholui. His palettes are always dark and the scenes are foreboding. He shows the tales and stories he depicts as if everything had the capacity for magic. With each passing year his technique gets more refined and the precision of his lines improves. It's no wonder that his works are kept in the Kholui museum of lacquer art.
The box shows a scene from the Pushkin's "The Tale of Tsar Saltan". Prince Gvidon, his wife, and his mother meet the ship on the board of which Tsar Saltan is sailing. Tsar Saltan heard much about the mysterious and rich island ruled by Prince Gvidon and his young beautiful wife, and now he has come to know if this island is indeed so rich and beautiful.
The details in this scene expose Galda as a true master of his craft. Numerous characters are expressive, and painted with natural expressions. The palette includes greens, blues, reds and various shades of brown. Gold paint is used to outline and highlight areas of emphasis in the scene. The work demonstrates a mastery of color combination and fine detail.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold patterns; on the sides the gold patterns are accented with silver metal paint.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui, and the title at the bottom of the scene. The same inscription can be on the lid's interior, with an additional confirmation that it is the original author's work, the artist's signature and the year of 2007.
