Description:

This traditional Kholui box is a creation of Milyushina Tatiana. It features the main characters from the Pushkin's "Tale of Sleeping Princess and Seven Bogatyrs". Here we can see the wicked Queen looking at her magic glass and asking: "Who is the most beautiful woman in the kingdom?" (the left bottom corner); the Queen's servant who has come to poison the Sleeping Princess with the apple (the center of the composition); all seven bogatyrs hastening to save their sworn sister (the upper right corner); and the crystal coffin where the Sleeping Princess has been put after being poisoned.
Brown, red and green tones of tempera paints dominate here; some of the details are enhanced with gold paint.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold and silver ornaments. On each of the box's sides Milyushina has painted an additional scene set into an oval. The front side features the Sleeping Princess who is ready to eat the poisoned apple; the right side shows the Moon that has a human face; on the rear side we can see Prince Yelisey asking the Wind where he can find his bride; the left side depicts the Sun that like the Moon has a human face.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. Signed with the title, Kholui, and the artist's name.
The innovation design of the box is in the box's front side that is hinged like the lid and can be opened!
