Description:

Sergey Dmitriyev of Kholuy painted this beautiful box. His art and his style are a product of self evolution which he has worked very hard on. He has made himself into a great artist by using his God-given talents to their fullest. It isn't surprising that his work gets better with every painting he completes.
The box continues Dmitriev's series of works dedicated to old Russian towns. We can remember such brilliant works from this series as “Indian Summer in Vladimir”, “Autumn in Plyos”, “Autumn in Kizhi” that have been exhibited on our website.
Here Dmitriev has chosen to depict a picturesque view of Suzdal in winter. Suzdal is a very old, legendary town with a fairy-tale charm. The white stone walls of its kremlin and monasteries own a majestic beauty, its church domes and belfries soar into the sky, and its neat wooden houses are decorated with exquisite carved patterns.
The palette is dominated with yellow-white, orange-brown and blue tones. The colors of the egg-tempera have been enhanced by the gold and aluminum highlights noticed throughout. The artist adds trees in the foreground that bends towards the center of the scene to give a sense of perspective, as sometimes perspectives can be lost when an expanse is wide and open.
Two parallel gold lines frame the scene. The box's sides are decorated with elaborate and very beautiful gold and aluminum designs.
The box is made out of paper-mache made in Kholuy. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged above the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The artist has written Kholuy, the title (“Suzdal”), and his name at the bottom of the scene. He has written the same on the interior of the lid, but added that this work is an artist's original and the year of 2007, all in gold.
