This thoroughly attractive piece of genuine Russian artistry was created by the popular Kholui painter Gryaznov. The work is called “Winter Entertainment”, and shows the happy villagers enjoying a sunny winter day. Some of them sledge down a hill, the others play snowballs, fish, or have a romantic rendezvous.
The scene is painted in various tones of blue and brown tempera paints. Gold paint is used to detail the costumes of some characters. The box's exterior is decorated with beautiful gold and aluminum ornaments.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge from the top of the scene, and rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui and the title.
