Description:

This is definitely a quality work from a talented Kholui artist, Yugeniy Dobrin. Dobrin has created multiple original works, including this one. The box's lid, and its four sides show various episodes from the popular story of, "The Sleeping Princess" written by A.S. Pushkin.
The lid shows seven Bogatyrs who sheltered the Princess and became her sworn brothers. On front the side Dobrin has painted the wicked queen's servant dressed like a beggar, who gives a poisoned apple to the Princess. The left side shows the Queen who holds her magic mirror, sitting on the throne; she scolds the Princess and her face is very angry. On the right side we can see Prince Yelisey who asks the Sun where he can find his beloved Princess. The rear side features the feast arranged in the kingdom to celebrate the marriage of Prince Yelisey and the Sleeping Princess. There are two additional scenes painted on the lid's sloping sides. One of them shows the wooden house in the forest where seven bogatyrs live while another one features a peasant who fights with a bear in the forest.
Each scene is brilliantly painted in Dobrin's signature style. The palette is rich and beautiful but predominance is given to Dobrin's favorite emerald green tones. Lustrous gold paint is used to enhance various details throughout the scenes.
The box's exterior is decorated with gorgeous ornaments painted in gold and accented with silver paint and emerald tempera paint.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top, and the box rests on four legs. At the bottom of the composition painted on the lid Dobrin has written his name, the title, Kholui and the year of 2007. Inside the lid, he has again provided the title, the year of 2007, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholui miracle.
