Description:

Sergey Devyatkin of Kholuy has painted this composition. His style was one of the most recognizable in the world of lacquer art. His flowing designs and patterns have a machine quality precision and he stylized his work in the icon painting style. The blend of his creative power and the ancient techniques of icon painters has made his work something special to the art world.
It is very pity that this Master has past us away in 2005.
This piece entitled "The Jealous Husband," is a scene that is closely related to the tale of "Merchant Kalashnikov." In the story, Kalashnikov's wife, Alyona Dmitrievna, is the most beautiful woman in Moscow. One day while out running errands she meet Kiribeevich: a guard employed by the Tsar. Although she is married, he tries to get her to go back to his place with him. She does not want to, and as she struggles to get away from her he rips her sleeve. When she comes back home she tells her husband about what happened, and Kalashnikov swears that he will have vengeance, and makes his brothers swear that if he is killed that they carry it out for him. In the mean time Kiribeevich went to the tsar and complained that she would not agree to get intimate with him and that he loved her, but he did not tell the tsar she was married. Then Kalashnikov challenged Kiribeevich to a boxing match, which ended in the death of Kiribeevich. When the tsar found out he summoned Kalashnikov and asked why he killed his best guard. Kalashinikov told him that it was only between he and God, but the tsar still had to punish him.
The artist uses an equal amount of cool and warm tones throughout the composition. There is a great sense of balance in the way he configures the architecture in relation to the characters. Each element is intricately rendered, which produces dynamic movement in the sky, the landscape, architecture, and in the characters. He uses gold to decorate the cupola on the churches, which are painted over with a criss-crossing pattern. Gold is also used to highlight the characters. All in all this piece is a visual treat for the art lover's eyes.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold ornamentation with aluminum accents frames the scene and wraps around the sides of the box. This is what Deviatkin is famous for. His ornamental work is so unique and one of a kind that it instantly catches the eye. The box has a hinge to the left of the composition and rests on 4 small legs. The artist has written the title, Kholui and his name at the bottom of the composition.
