Description:

Looking at this bright Mstera box you will immediately recognize the unique painting style of Sergey Dmitriev. It shows several scenes from the popular Russian folk tale "Ivan Tsarevich and the Grey Wolf". The tale tells about the adventures of Prince Ivan Tsarevich and his friend, the Grey Wolf. The Wolf was a magician, and helped Ivan to get the firebird, to get the horse with the golden mane, and to get the beautiful princess.
The scene painted in the upper left corner of the box shows the old Tsar who sends his three sons to fetch the Firebird that has filched apples from the royal garden. The scene painted in the right upper corner depicts Ivan who has already stolen the Firebird from the Tsar Afron, and the Wolf who helps him to steal Elena the Beautiful from Tsar Dalmat's palace. In the left bottom corner we can see Ivan and his friend, the Grey Wolf, who have managed to steal the horse with the golden mane, and the princess. The central scene shows Ivan and Elena the Beautiful riding the horse with the golden mane. Ivan holds the Firebird whose fiery feathers illuminate their way; the Grey Wolf runs nearby, protecting his friend. Just under this scene we can see Ivan's elder brothers who killed Ivan because of jealousy, but fortunately Ivan was revived by the Grey Wolf with the help of Dead and Life Water. The scene painted in the right bottom corner features the happy end of the tale: Ivan has returned home with the beautiful wife.
The entire surface of the box's lid is filled with Dmitriev's wondrous details. The palette is rich and bright; it is filled with various shades of orange, red, green and yellow tempera paints. Gold paint is used to outline and highlight areas of emphasis in the composition. This is done with subtlety and an eye for artistic integrity. The composition is the perfect combination of skill, charm and detail.
Fine golden scrollwork accented with silver paint is used to decorate the edges of the lid, and the box's sides. It is a fountain of elegant artistry.
The box is constructed out of papier-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. The lid is hinged at the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. At the bottom of the composition the artist has written his name, Kholui, and the title. On the lid's interior he has written the same but added the year of 2007, the confirmation that this box is of an author original design, and his flaring signature.
