Description:

This box was painted in a dual effort by the married team of Svetlana and Yevgeniy Vlasov. The work is called "Lukomorye" that can be translated into English as "By the Ocean". In the Russian folklore "Lukomorye" is also known as the fairy land inhabited by various fairy-tale characters (here we can remember Pushkin's introduction to the popular poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" that begins with the following line: "An oak tree greening by the ocean; A golden chain about it wound..."
The composition shows the characters from different Russian fairy-tales that live in Lukomorye. In the center of the composition the artists have painted Ivan Ttsarevich with a maiden whom he loves. From the right of this scene we can see the green oak and the Learned Cat from Pushkin's introduction to "Ruslan and Lyudmila". The right upper corner depicts the horrible dragon, Zmey Gorynitch; Ivan Tsarevich riding the Grey Wolf together with Elena the Beautiful, and the firebird flying over them. The right bottom corner features the Water-Spirit and the water-nymphs. In the left bottom corner the artists have drawn Sister Alyonushka and her brother Ivanushka who hide from Baba-Yaga's servants, Geese and Swans, depicted in the left upper corner. The left upper corner also shows Ivan Tsarevich who receives a magic clew from Baba-Yaga that will help him to save the maiden whom he loves.
The artist fills the composition with lots of action and detail. Each scene is enhanced with gold metallic paint that adds a rich brightness to the work.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold patterns accented with silver paint on the box's sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four legs. On the lid's interior the artists painted in gold the intricate ornament inside which they wrote their names, a list of materials used, the title, the village name of Kholuy, the year of 2007, and the confirmation that this work is of original design.
