Description:

The unique painting style of Yugeny Dobrin shines on this beautiful Kholui box. Here the artist has chosen to depict several recognizable moments from the fairy-tale “Father Frost” or “Morozko”. In the right part of the composition we can see the girl's stepmother who orders her husband to carry his dear daughter to the winter forest and to leave her there. The girl's stepsisters look out of the window of the peasant's hut, and encourage their mother in scolding the girl. In the center of the composition Dobrin has painted the girl who leaves the forest riding in the sledge pulled by the beautiful white steeds. She is dressed in rich clothes given her by Father Frost, and carries home the big chest full of precious stones also presented her by Father Frost (Father Frost is drawn behind the sledge). The left part of the composition shows the girl's old father who is sorry that he has left his only daughter in the cold, winter forest. He decides to come back to the place where he has left her, and take her home.
Blue greenish tones of tempera paints dominate here as the action takes place in winter. The costumes of the characters, the architecture, the sledge, the harness of the steeds are skillfully detailed with gold and silver paints. The box's exterior is decorated with Dobrin's signature style luxuriant ornaments painted in gold and accented with silver paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed, titled (“Morozko”) and dated (2007) by the artist at the bottom of the composition. Inside the lid, Dobrin has again provided the title, the year, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. He also has left here his signature.
