Vladimir Poturayko of Kholui painted this exceptional lacquer box. His style is one that amazes and dazzles the eye with fine details and frenetic movement. It takes a great deal of experience and thought in order to create a composition that is as beautiful as this.
The composition is interestingly designed. In the background the artist has drawn a beautiful view of the forest lake at a moonlit night. This scene seemed to be framed with a forest setting painted in the foreground. The figure of a hunter and each of the forest animals and birds drawn here are masterfully detailed. Gold and aluminum paint can be found detailing almost the entire scene. It is done with great delicacy and care.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Shining and very intricate gold ornamentation accented with aluminum frames the scene on the lid and wraps around the sides of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed with the artist's initials (P.V.), and the village of Kholui at the bottom of the composition. On the interior of the lid the artist wrote his name, the title ("Evening Hunt"), his uniquely flaring signature, the village name of Kholuy and the year of 2007 of which the piece was finished in gold paint. Also found here is the reference to the fact that this piece is an author's original design.
