Description:

This neatly detailed Palekh box is a brilliant creation of Yugeniy Dobrin from the village of Kholui. It shows a scene from the Russian tale, "Emelya and the Magic Pike". In short, this tale is about a young man who finds a special fish when he goes to get water from the river. In return for letting him go, the Magic Pike offers to fulfill Emelia's wishes. Being a lazy fellow, Emelya light-heartedly uses magic forces, asking the pike to help him to perform his chores while he relaxes. In this scene Emelya gets to the tsar's palace, riding a stove.
Yugeniy Dobrin has a very distinct style that can immediately be recognized by the minute details and his color usage. The palette incorporates Dobrin's favorite emerald-green, grey and violet tones. He uses them in perfect harmony, alternating tones and hues in all the right places. The costumes of the characters, the architecture and the sun are abundantly detailed with gold paint.
The scene is framed with an elegant gold pattern composed of gold beads. More complex gold design completed with silver snowflakes can be found wrapping around the box's sides.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. Dobrin has signed, dated (2008) and titled the composition on the lid. Inside the lid, he has again provided the title, the year of 2008, Kholui and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholuy miracle.
