Sergey Dmitriyev of Kholuy does not cease to amaze his audience with each new box he paints. One gets a sense that he is only getting better with every subsequent work that appears from under his already talented brush. Collecting his work is quite interesting because it shows his evolution. Where many artists stagnate, Sergey Dmitriyev excels.
A modest beauty of the Russian countryside in winter is glorified in this work. The palette is very cool and shows a representation of frosty Russian winter. Brilliant silver powder creates a sparkle of the snow, and the icy river. A gleam of the sunset is reproduced with the help of gold powder.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is decorated with very intricate gold designs accented on the box's sides with silver paint. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui and the title (“Winter Evening”).
