Sergey Dmitriyev of Kholuy does not cease to amaze his audience with each new box he paints. One gets a sense that he is only getting better with every subsequent work that appears from under his already talented brush. Collecting his work is quite interesting because it shows his evolution. Where some artists stagnate, Sergey Dmitriyev excels.
The work is based on "The Lord of the Rings", an epic high fantasy novel written by philologist J.R.R. Tolkien. The Lord of the Rings is considered to have had a great effect on modern fantasy; the impact of Tolkien's works is such that the use of the words "Tolkienian" and "Tolkienesque" has been recorded in the Oxford English Dictionary.
The palette is based on contrast colors. Warm brown and orange tones are successfully combined here with deep blues and greens. Gold and silver paint is used to add highlights and attract more light to the scene.
The edges of the lid are adorned with elegant gold scrollwork framed with tiny gold beads. The same pattern decorates the bottom part of the box's body. The box's sides are adorned with Dmitriev's signature style, luxuriant gold floral patterns accented with aluminum.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge from the top of the scene, and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Kholui.
