Description:

This alluring piece of authentic Russian artistry was created by the talented Yugeniy Dobrin from the village of Kholuy. The work is painted on the historical theme, and shows the Russian Saint and the patron of Russian warriors - Alexander Nevsky. Alexander Nevsky (1220-1263) Prince of Novgorod in 1236-1251. Grand Prince of Vladimir since 1252. Yaroslav II's son. Under his command the Russians won battles with the Swedes (Battle on Neva, 1240) and the Teutonic Knights (battle on the Ice of the Lake Chudskoe called "Ledovoe Poboishche", 1242).
Here we can see Alexander Nevsky battling with the Teutonic Knights at the head of the Russian Army. The ice of the Chudskoe Lake have cracked under the weight of the steel-clad Teutons, and some of them start sinking. The brushwork is exquisite, which is enhanced by the hairline gold and aluminum detailing.
The scene is framed with a nice pattern composed of gold beads. More complex gold and aluminum ornamentation can be found wrapping around the box's sides. In the middle of the box's front side the artist has painted the helmet, swords and arrows, whereas on the box's rear side he has drawn the battle of a Russian warrior and a Teutonic Knight.
The box is constructed from quality paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box is hinged from the top of the scene, and rests on four legs. The artist has signed the work with his name, the title (“Alexander Nevsky”), the year of 2009, and the village of Kholui at the bottom of the scene. He did the same on the lid's interior but added that this work is his original artistic creation and his cursive signature.
