Description:

This alluring piece was created by Kholui artist Sergey Dmitriev. Here Sergey displays his talent for the creation of an impressive view of St. Petersburg. By viewing the depiction of both the elegantly detailed troika and the impressive buildings which fill the background we can see that the most important elements in his work are compositional structure, expressiveness of image and effect. Dmitriev is finished when he is satisfied with the work.
This composition depicts the grand splender of St. Isaac's Cathedral, on the shores of the Neva River, in St. Petersburg. Designed by French architect Montferrand, it took forty years to complete (1818-1858). It is the fourth largest cathedral in the entire world, and with it's marble and granite construction makes it's weight over 30,000 tons.
To the right of the Cathedral stands the Admiralty spire, which is considered the premier symbol of the city. To the left of the Cathedral lies the Peter and Paul Fortress. The fortress was designed to protect the Neva lands that were won from the Swedes during the Northern War. (1700-1721). The Rostral columns in the composition, to the right and left of the Cathedral, once served as lighthouses for ships traveling on the Neva.
The box demonstrates Dmitriev's luxurious style and his impeccable painting technique. Light blue and white tempera paints help to create an illusion of a sunny winter day. This pale palette is enriched by lustrous gold and silver paint that helps to outline each element of the composition. Gold and silver paint is also used to decorate the box's exterior with rich and very elaborate patterns.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on legs. On the lid's interior the artist has written his name, the year of 2009, the title (
