Description:

This is definitely a quality work from a talented Kholui artist, Yugeniy Dobrin. Dobrin has created multiple original works, including this one. The box's lid, and its four sides show various episodes from the popular Russian folk fairy-tale of, "Sivka-Burka". The plot of this tale is similar to “The Humpbacked Little Pony” but differs a little bit.
In this tale the youngest in the family, Ivan the Simpleton, competes with his two brothers in courage. For his courage, Ivan gets the magic horse, Sivka-Burka that is ready to serve him. With the help of Sivka-Burka's magic powers, Ivan manages to jump to the highest tower in the king's palace, where the king's daughter is standing, and take the ring she is holding. This makes him the victor in a contest, and for performing this feat he is allowed to marry the tsar's daughter.
The box's lid shows Ivan kissing the Princess riding his magic steed, Sivka-Burka, in presence of the Tsar and all people of the kingdom. On the box's front side the artist has painted Ivan and the Princess looking out of the window. The box's left and rear sides show Ivan's brothers sleeping instead of fulfilling their father's task; at this moment Sivka-Burka tramples down the wheat field of their father. On the box's right side we can see Ivan who is ready to catch Sivka-Burka.
The palette of this work is very diverse, and filled with beautifully combined tones of tempera paints. Gold paint is used to add intricate details that bring out the true beauty of the palette and develop the contours as well.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with sumptuous gold patterns accented with aluminum but in very minimal amounts. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui, the year of 2009 and the title.
