Olga Dobrina is the author of this attractive five-sided box. The work is called “Pushkin's Tales”, and each of its sides shows a fragment from various tales written by Alexander Pushkin. On the box's lid we can see a fragment from “Ruslan and Lyudmila”. Ruslan sets out in search of his beloved Luydmila kidnapped by the wicked wizard, Chernomor. On the box's front, left and right sides the artist has painted some fragments from “The Dead Princess”. The front side shows the Dead Princess, Prince Yelisey, and all seven bogatyrs; the left side features the wicked Queen ordering her servant to kill the Dead Princess while the right side shows the moment when seven bogatyrs offer the Dead Princess to be their sworn sister. On the box's rear side Dobrina has painted the happy moment from “The Tale of Tsar Saltan”, when all the family is reunited and the sumptuous feast is arranged.
Each of the scenes is accurately painted using bright tempera paints. Gold paint is used to enhance various details.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with sumptuous gold patterns accented with aluminum but in very minimal amounts. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Kholui and the title.
