Description:

This box is a splendid creation of Dobrin Dmitriy, son of talented and well-known Kholui artist Yevgeniy Dobrin from the village of Kholui.
The work is called "When Lilac is Blooming", and shows the lad who walks through the village playing the accordion accompanied by two pretty girls. In the background the artist has painted peasant wooden houses, and the tree of Lilac covered with large sprays of purple fragrant flowers. Lilac is the most popular tree in Russia that is planted in gardens and parks. It starts to bloom in the end of May when the nature is so beautiful...
Dobrin's favorite emerald green tones of tempera paints predominate here. Gold paint is used to create a sparkle of the roof and crosses of a small village church; to highlight the sky, the grass, the trees, the roofs of wooden peasant houses; and to decorate the characters' costumes. There is a good feel of ancient Russian tradition in the scene, with the garlanded wooden carvings that adorn the houses, and nicely detailed Russian national costumes painted with great skill and accuracy.
The scene is decorated with very intricate floral ornamentation accented with aluminum. In the right and left, upper corners of the lid this ornamentation is completed with the sprays of Lilac also drawn in gold and aluminum. Even more intricate and beautiful gold and aluminum ornamentation can be found wrapping around the box's sides.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. Dobrin has signed, dated (2009) and titled his work on the lid. Inside the lid, he has again written the title, Kholui, the year, and his name, as well as an indication that this is an original work. The finishing touch is a cursive signature to finalize this Kholuy miracle.
