Description:

This masterful beauty was composed by a husband and wife artistic duet of Yugeniy and Svelana Vlasovs. On the box's lid the artists have pained some episodes from the popular tale "The Snowmaiden". The subject of the depicted tale is based on the like-named play by Aleksandr Ostrovsky.
In the center of the composition we can see Mizgir presenting the Snowmaiden as his bride before Tsar Berendey. In the left upper corner we can see happy people of Berendey's kingdom playing snowballs while the right upper corner shows the Snowmaiden saying goodbye to her mother, Spring Beauty. The left bottom corner depicts Lel playing his flute and some maidens listening to his music. A little above this scene we can the Snowmaiden and her adopting parents standing in the winter forest. The right bottom corner features the Snowmaiden spinning yarn and her adopting parents standing on the riverside. The top part of the composition displays the Snomaiden melting under the merciless sunrays and the Berendeyans singing and dancing in a ring.
To paint this composition, the Vlasovs have used a wide range of bright tempera paints. Here the artists have demonstrated their unique and impressive detail work. Each scene is filled with extremely fine roots, blades of grass, berries, birds, mushrooms, leaves, and flowers. The strokes are very thin and precise. The details within the composition are enhanced tremendously by the golden and aluminum contours.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with luxuriant gold and silver filigree decoration. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests on legs. On the lid's interior the artists have written their names, Kholui, the title of the tale, the confirmation that it is the original author's work, a list of the materials, and the year of 2009. This inscription is surrounded with beautiful gold filigree designs.
