Description:

This incredible box was painted by the highly talented husband and wife artistic duet of Yugeniy and Svelana Vlasovs. It is an original work that contains a number of recognizable scenes from Pushkin's tale of Tsar Saltan. In the left upper corner of the composition we can see three sisters sitting inside the hut and spinning yarn. Each of them dreams imagining what she would do if she were the tsar's wife. The tsar stands outside overhearing their conversation. To the right of this scene there is a barrel swaying on the sea waves where the young tsaritsa and her child are sealed. The next scene shows the hawk attacking the Princess Swan. In the right upper corner of the composition we can see tsaritsa and her child who have come out of the barrel and found themselves on the magic island. The right bottom corner of the composition depicts Prince Gvidon and his mother meeting Tsar Saltan who has come to see the miracles of the magic island. A little above we can see the thirty-three knights with their old uncle Chernomor, rising from the raging sea. The left bottom corner shows the squirrel that all day long shells golden nuts, separating gold nutshells from emerald kernel of nuts. In the center of the composition we can see the feast in Gvidon's palace arranged to celebrate his family reunion.
With an abundance of detail Vlasovs give the eyes a feast of information to digest. It is hard to conceive the amount of brushstrokes they made, the amount of blending and layering, or the constant re-working of the scenes to make them look perfect. Each of the scenes is an absolute delight. The details are enhanced tremendously by the golden contours illuminating each and every inch of the moment composed.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is decorated with rich and very intricate gold and silver patterns. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. On the lid's interior the artists painted in gold an attractive floral pattern. Inside this pattern they wrote their names, a list of materials used, the title, the village name of Kholuy, the year of 2010, and the confirmation that this work is of original design.
