This gorgeous box was created by the talented Svetlana Vlasova from the village of Kholui. Svetlana specializes in intricate golden scroll work and miniature detailing of lacquer boxes. Very often she works along side her husband, a skilled miniature painter Yevgeniy Vlasov.
The work is called "Maslenitsa" or "Pancake-week" and shows two noble ladies dressed in elegant clothes who left St.-Petersburg to attend a village feast of Maslenitsa and welcome the beginning of warm spring.
The scene is skillfully painted with a very thin brush. The strokes are fine and precise. Cold blues suitable for reproduction of a winter scene dominate the landscape. Fine golden and aluminum contours makes the details all the more amazing.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Beautiful gold and aluminum filigree patterns frame the scene and wrap around the sides of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on a flat bottom. On the interior of the lid the artist has added a beautiful pattern of golden filigree which surrounds an inscription. The inscription lists the materials used, the author's name and the fact that this is an artist original, the title for the piece, the village name of Kholuy and the year of 2011 of which the piece was finished.
