This traditional Kholui box is a creation of Tatiana Milyushina. It features the main characters from the Pushkin's "Tale of Tsar Saltan".
Brown, red and green tones of tempera paints dominate here; some of the details are enhanced with gold paint.
The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold and silver ornaments. On each of the box's sides Milyushina has painted an additional scenes set into an ovals.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Kholui.
