Description:

Olga Dobrina is the author of this attractive five-sided casket. The work is called Russian Fairy-tales, and each of its sides shows a fragment from various tales.
The box's lid depicts Ilya Muromets who is the most famous of Russian bogatyrs. He is presented here like a saint man who saved Russia from Solovey Razboyinik (also known as the Evil Bandit the Nightingale Whistler) who symbolizes the Mongol over-lordship.
On the front side Sadko is playing on Gusli to a Sea Tsar.
On the right side depicted a Tale of a Scarlet Flower (similar to a "Beauty and the Beast" tale).
To the left -Baba Yaga from "Geese and Swans" Fairy-tale and on the back side- the very beginning of a story of a "Frog Princess".
Each of the scenes is accurately painted using bright tempera paints. Gold paint is used to enhance various details.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The exterior is decorated with sumptuous gold patterns accented with aluminum but in very minimal amounts. The lid is hinged, and the box rests on four legs. The lid is signed with the artist's name, Kholui and the title and each of the sides is signed with the title of the scene.
