This beautiful Kholui box was painted by the highly talented husband and wife artistic duet of Yugeniy and Svelana Vlasovs.
It shows a scene from the Russian tale, "Emelya and the Magic Pike". In short, this tale is about a young man who finds a special fish when he goes to get water from the river. In return for letting him go, the Magic Pike offers to fulfill Emelia's wishes. Being a lazy fellow, Emelya light-heartedly uses magic forces, asking the pike to help him to perform his chores while he relaxes. In this scene Emelya gets to the tsar's palace, riding a stove.
With an abundance of detail Vlasovs give the eyes a feast of information to digest. It is hard to conceive the amount of brush strokes they made, the amount of blending and layering, or the constant re-working of the scene to make it look perfect. The details are enhanced tremendously by the golden and silver contours illuminating each and every inch of the moment composed.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The exterior is decorated with rich and very intricate gold and silver patterns.
The lid is hinged from the left of the scene, and the box rests flat. On the lid's interior the artists wrote in gold their names, a list of materials used, the title -"Emelya", the village name of Kholui, the year of 2012, and the confirmation that this work is of original design.
