Description:

IMPORTANT NOTE: this box was displayed on Expo in the All-Russia Museum of Folk and Applied art in Moscow devoted to the 80th anniversary of Kholui Art. The Expo was opened on the 12th of November and took a place till the 6th of December 2014.

Superb artist Vlasova Svetlana from the village of Kholui has painted this colorful box. Every box of this talented family tandem -Evgeniy and Svetlana Vlasovs is a breathtaking piece! Often Svetlana is doing the important beginning - the composition of the box and Evgeniy doing gold scroll work! The fact that this box was displayed in a Museum, confirms the highest quality of the painting!
The composition of the box is based on the Pushkin's "Tale of a Fisherman and the Golden Fish". In this tale the old fisherman caught the magic golden fish who promised to fulfill all his wishes. The fisherman was a simple-minded man who didn't want anything but his greedy wife forced him to ask the fish to fulfill more and more wishes. In the end the fisherman's wife was punished by the magic golden fish.
The box depicts several recognizable moments from the tale. One of them is in the left lower corner, shows when the Old Fisherman caught the Magic Golden Fish. The scene is painted in brown, red, orange and blue tempera paints. Gold is used to paint the golden fish, the sparkling horizon behind the fisherman's back, and to details painted in the background.
The scene is framed with a gold ornamentation. The box's sides are adorned with intricate gold floral patterns accented with aluminum paint.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with dark red lacquer. The lid is hinged at top, and the box rests on the four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title and the village of Kholui on the lid's interior of the box.
Fine piece!
