Description:

An old Master Nikolay Baburin of Kholui is the artist who painted this piece depicting a very traditional Russian scene. This scene is based on a Russian folk song called "Khutorok." From Russian language khutorok is translated to English as a small village, farm-town, or hamlet where the people who live there sustain themselves and work for the betterment of the village. It depicts a group of villagers at home singing and drinking vodka after a hard day of work. With the vodka they eat pastries and meats while the musician of the group plays the balalaika. They are also waiting for their friend to come home who has been hunting and is traveling up the river to get there. Undoubtedly the get-together will become more raucous when he gets home since they will be celebrating his arrival.
To paint the scene the artist uses three main tones: yellows, reds and greens. The black background intensifies the colors making them even more brighter. Gold paint beautifully detail the stars in the dark sky, the trees, the water, characters' costumes and the architecture.
Baburin has then demonstrated his master hand and painted unique and expert floral patterns around the composition. These patterns are painted with gold paints and accented with green and red tempera paints. The sides of the box are decorated with identical patterns of bigger size.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box has a hinge above the composition and rests on four legs. The artist wrote Kholui, the title ("Khutorok"), and his name at the bottom of the painting.
