Description:

This attractive oval box is an original creation of A. Kopienko from the village of Kholui. It is based on the M. Lermontov's poem "The Song about young Merchant Kalashnikov, the Servant of Tsar Ivan Vasilievich". In this poem, Kalashnikov's wife, Alyona Dmitrievna, is the most beautiful woman in Moscow. Although she is married, Kiribeevich, the tsar's oprichnik, tries to tempt her. To defend his wife's reputation, Kalashnikov challenges Kiribeevich to a boxing match, and kills him.
Here the artist depicts a recognizable moment from this poem when Kiribeevich tries to tempt Alyona Dmitrievna in presence of amazed people. An equal amount of cool and warm tones is used to paint this scene. Aluminum paint creates a magic silvery shimmering of the snow; gold paint highlights the domes of the cathedrals and details the characters' costumes.
Tiny gold beads frame the scene, while the box's sides and each of its legs are adorned with complicated gold and aluminum floral ornaments.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged at top, and the box rests on legs. A. Kopienko has written the title ("There is a Snow-Storm in the Street"), his name, Kholui, the year of 2006 and the confirmation that this work is his original creation on the lid's interior.
