Description:

This beautiful piece of Russian artistry was composed by the talented Tatyana Strunina from the village of Mstera. Her work is dream-like in its coloration. Each and every tone brings life to the individual character or landscape it has been chosen to represent. Here we can see several scenes from the adventurous fairy-tale entitled, "The Tale of Tsar Saltan." Sent adrift some years ago, Gvidon knew in his heart that eventually the truth would come out. The scene painted on the box's lid shows the reunion of the family: Tsar Saltan holds the hand of his wife, whereas Prince Gvidon is depicted near his beloved Princess Swan. The sides of the box depict some key moments of the story, including Gvidon's arrival to wondrous island, the magic squirrel, the Thirty-three Warriors of the Sea, and Gvidon's first meeting with the Princess Swan.
The box is constructed from paper-mache made in the village of Mstera. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. Flowered golden filigree decoration frames the lid's artistry as well as all four sides of the base. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition to be used for ease of opening. The box rests upon four feet. It is signed with the artist's name, village, and title.
