This lavish piece of genuine Russian artistry was composed by the talented Tatyana Strunina from the village of Mstera. The coloration within this scene is so bright that it almost appears as if there was a light source within the box. The artist does an excellent job in making sure that the scene is a faithful adaptation of the setting from the story. It is just as luxurious as the author originally intended. The subject is the famous Russian fairy-tale entitled, "The Tale of Ruslan and Ludmila" written by A.S. Pushkin.
The lid and the sides of this box are covered with charming compositions that show different scenes from the tale. Looking at them we can remember the some key moments of the story: Ruslan and his rivals leave the kingdom intending to find the beautiful Lyudmila; Ruslan's meeting with the old Finn; the battle of Ruslan and the wicked sorcerer Chernomor; Lyudmila, standing in the Chernomor's wonderful garden; the Chernomor, sitting on the throne, the Giant Head; and the reunion of Ruslan and Lyudmila (depicted on the box's lid).
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The edges of the lid and its sides are decorated with beautiful gold patterns. The exterior of the box is painted with black lacquer while the interior is completed with dark red lacquer. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a small platform. The work is signed with the artists name, title and village on the base of the box.
