Description:

This traditional Mstera box has been painted by the well-known artist Pyotr Sosin. Its subject is based on the Russian fairy-tale "Sadko". Sadko plays his psaltery while the Tsar Morskoi (the Sea King) listens to him with a great pleasure. Many creatures of the sea also have come here to listen Sadko's fascinating tune. The festivities become so frenzied that the storm is gathering.
The palette is based on beautiful combination of contrast colors. Cold greens and blues are used to paint the underwater kingdom of the Sea King, while warm yellows, reds and oranges are used to paint the rest of the scene. Gold and aluminum paints are used to add various details.
The painter is charmed with the beauty of underwater realm. He painstakingly paints various species of fish, the starfish, the octopus, the jellyfish, and bright water-plants. With the same assiduity he works out the figures of the characters, their faces and clothing.
Sosin makes supreme usage of the overlay method of application. This is done by painting one particular portion of the piece, thinly coating it with clear lacquer and then continuing on with the compositional process. By doing this, the artist creates three dimensional depth and perspective.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The box's exterior is decorated with intricate gold and aluminum patterns. The lid isn't hinged and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed by the artist.
