Description:

Antonina Medvedeva from the village of Mstera whose cartoonish style of painting is always recognizable created this large five-sided box. It features main episodes from the children's classic tale of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs".
The box's left side shows the Snow White and her faithful suitor, the handsome Prince. The Snow White feeds the birds, while the Princes says her how beautiful she is. The right side features the Snow White speaking with forest animals while the Evil Queen looks at her and envies her beauty and youth. The rear side depicts the Snow White who found the shelter in the house of seven dwarfs; the Prince who searches for her; and also the Evil Queen's servant who intends to poison the Snow White. The front side displays the Snow White and her friends, seven dwarfs, who mine diamonds.
The scenes are painted in the traditional Mstera school palette. Predominance is given to reds, greens and browns. The details are added with gold paint.
The lid's sloping sides are decorated with rich gold ornamentation accompanied with four small miniatures of various animals: two hares, a deer and a fox painted in tempera paints. The edges of the lid are adorned with a simple gold wavy pattern. The top part of the box's sides is decorated with gold and aluminum floral pattern, whereas the bottom part of the box's sides is adorned with a simple gold leafy design.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes its interior. The lid is hinged at the top, and the box rests on four legs.
