Ivan Vikhrev is the author of this romantic scene that shows a brave hussar having a date with a pretty maiden near the fountain. The landscape is painted in rather dark tones as the action is happening at night while the character's costumes are drawn in bold tones. Gold and aluminum paint is used to detail and outline various portions of the scene.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. Gold beading frames the scene as it outlines the edges of the lid, while more complex gold filigree accented with aluminum flowers wraps around the sides of the box. The box has a hinge located above the composition and rests on four legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, Palekh, and the year of 2005.
